Hi. My name is Laura McClenahan and I have the privilege of being the grade 4/5 teacher at Emily Carr Elementary school in Vancouver. This year I have also been lucky enough to work with four other mentors as a Learning Technologies Mentor for the Vancouver School Board. I have been a teacher for many years. I began "teaching" way back in 1986 as a swimming instructor with the Vancouver Parks Board. I have taught a variety of subjects and grades and have even been known to teach adults and pre-schoolers.
I love learning about this fabulous world that we all share. I try to bring my personal enthusiasm to the classroom each day and hope to learn many things from all of the students that I teach. I have told my classes that they are all "teachers" and that we are on this learning adventure together.
For the past few years I have been incorporating technology into my day to day teaching. It has opened up a world that before I would never have imagined. My students have become the teachers at the front of the room. They are engaged in their own projects and learning and are excited to teach each other new skills and facts.
I am a facilitator and am learning right alongside them each and every day. Technology does not replace teachers or good teaching methods. But it does allow students to show, share and access their learning in ways that I could not when I was an elementary student.
It is an exciting time to be a teacher and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for all learners, big and small.
