Hi. My name is Laura McClenahan and I have the privilege of being one of the Kindergarten teachers at Emily Carr Elementary school in Vancouver. For the past previous three years I was working as a District Resource Teacher for Curriculum and Assessment four days a week. This team helped to facilitate and teach teachers about implementing the new BC Curriculum and communicating student learning. Through the use of ongoing communications with parents and digital portfolios we were encouraging learners to take more ownership and sharing of their learning using a strength based approach. The students are encouraged to reflect upon their learning journey using these questions as a guide "Where am I now? Where am I going? What do I need to get there?"
Five years ago I was also lucky enough to work with four other mentors as a Learning Technologies Mentor for the Vancouver School Board.
My teaching career began way back in 1986 as a swimming instructor with the Vancouver Parks Board. I have taught a variety of subjects and grades and have even been known to teach adults and pre-schoolers.
I love learning about this fabulous world that we all share and I try to bring my personal enthusiasm to the classroom every day.
I hope to learn many things from all of the students that I teach. Everyone is a "teacher” and we are on this learning adventure together. For the past few years I have been incorporating technology into my day to day teaching. It has opened up a world that before I would never have imagined. My students have become the teachers at the front of the room. They are engaged in their own projects and learning and are excited to teach each other new skills and facts.
I am a facilitator and am learning right alongside them each and every day. Technology does not replace teachers or good teaching methods. But it does allow students to show, share and access their learning in ways that I could not imagine when I was an elementary student.
It is an exciting time to be a teacher and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for all learners, big and small.
Please contact me with any questions at the following email.
